An initial investment estimated at 16,8 billion dollars, At least 3.000 jobs and an industrial project which, according to the promoters' intentions, could exceed the 100 million square feet of production surface area, equivalent to approximately 9,3 million square metres. SpaceX e Tesla have chosen Grimes County, Texas, to build Terafab, the large complex intended for the production of advanced semiconductors announced by the two companies in 2026.

The project stems from a specific industrial problem: securing a sufficient quantity of chips to support the growth of artificial intelligence systems, robotics, autonomous driving, and the computing infrastructure that SpaceX intends to develop in space. The two companies estimate that their combined demand could exceed a terawatt of computing capacity, an order of magnitude that, according to the promoters, could not be satisfied by the production capacity currently available from external suppliers.

The answer is a particularly strong form of vertical integrationThe Terafab is expected to combine the manufacturing of logic and memory devices, advanced packaging, and testing activities in a single complex. This configuration aims to reduce the organizational gap between component design, production, and testing, allowing for faster process and architecture modifications. The announced size, however, refers to a project to be developed in phases, not a fully-configured facility.

A lab in Austin is preparing for large-scale production.

Terafab does not start directly from Grimes County. In April 2026, Tesla began construction of a research fab on Giga Texas' North Campus, in Austin. The research facility represents the preliminary step towards the future production complex: an environment in which to refine processes, manufacturing techniques, and integration before scaling them up to much larger volumes.

The strategy had already been outlined in March, when SpaceX and Tesla announced their collaboration on Terafab. SpaceX's financial documentation also indicates the involvement of Intel, which joined the project in April 2026 with expertise in semiconductor design, manufacturing, and packaging. Specific agreements regarding individual projects, timelines, milestones, and investments remain subject to separate negotiations.

The difference between the Austin and Grimes County experimental sites is substantial. The former is intended to develop and validate technologies; the latter is conceived as industrial-scale manufacturing campusThe documents filed under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation program describe the first phase of semiconductor factories, clean rooms, subfabs, engineering offices, warehouses, energy infrastructure, and water and industrial wastewater treatment and recycling facilities.

The incentive documentation also allows us to distinguish the corporate announcement from the administrative path of the project. The analyses presented to the Texas authorities describe four stages and a potential overall investment of up to 119 billion dollarsThis is a prospective value linked to the completion of the entire program and should not be confused with the $16,8 billion indicated by SpaceX and Tesla for the initial phase.

Optimus, Cybercab and space data centers behind the demand

Terafab's peculiarity also concerns the type of demand that should fuel its production. Tesla needs processors optimized for theedge computing and inference, that is, to run artificial intelligence models directly on the systems that need to make decisions, without constantly depending on a large remote computing center. Among the applications indicated are humanoid robots. Optimus and autonomous vehicles Cybercab.

SpaceX is instead looking at high-performance chips also for its own projects. data centers in spaceThe company linked the development of Terafab to the need to increase access to artificial intelligence hardware and the prospect of building satellite constellations capable of hosting computing power in orbit.

This convergence changes the industrial significance of the project. A semiconductor factory typically operates within a global supply chain in which design, wafer production, memory, assembly, packaging, and end-use applications can involve numerous companies spread across multiple countries. Terafab, on the other hand, aims to more closely connect chip design, manufacturing, packaging, testing, and end users.

The choice also depends on the nature of the products. A processor for a robot, an autonomous vehicle, or a satellite is not evaluated solely in terms of theoretical computing power. Power consumption, heat dissipation, reliability, latency, size, and integration with the rest of the hardware become key variables. Controlling a larger portion of the supply chain can shorten the cycles required for an application change to be transferred to the component design and subsequently verified on the product.

However, the intrinsic complexity of advanced semiconductor manufacturing remains. Building construction is only part of the investment: a fab requires lithography equipment, deposition and etching systems, metrology, ultrapure materials, electrical and water infrastructure, contamination control, and a network of highly specialized suppliers. Actual production capacity will therefore depend on the technologies installed, the process nodes adopted, production yields, and the time required to qualify the lines.

Grimes County Becomes a New Industrial Hub for Texans

The identified site is located in Grimes County, in the southeastern part of the Brazos Valley and not far from the Bryan-College Station area. This move brings an exceptionally large industrial project to a county with fewer than 35.000 residents and changes the scale of infrastructure and investment the area is accustomed to dealing with.

SpaceX and Tesla expect the complex to take at least 3.000 Guests, with a significant portion of the workforce coming from Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County. The companies point to other Texas settlements as a benchmark, where between 60 and 80 percent of new hires would be local residents. This is based on company data and an employment target that will need to be verified during the project's development.

For the local community, the impact doesn't just affect direct workers. Building a fab of this size requires construction companies, installers, technicians, maintenance workers, equipment suppliers, logistics services, and personnel with advanced manufacturing skills. SpaceX and Tesla also intend to collaborate with local schools and organizations dedicated to vocational training to develop programs consistent with the skills required by the facility.

The project is part of an already extensive industrial presence of companies linked to Elon Musk in the United States Southern and especially in Texas. SpaceX operates at Starbase, Bastrop, and McGregor, while Tesla has moved its headquarters to the state and produces vehicles at Giga Texas, in the Austin area. According to SpaceX, its Texas operations have generated over 56.000 direct and indirect jobs and an estimated economic impact of more than $28 billion; these figures are disclosed by the company and do not equate to the direct employment impact alone.

Grimes County has already addressed the issue of incentives. In June 2026, local officials approved a reinvestment zone and a related tax treaty for the project. Public documentation available at the time set minimum commitments for SpaceX that were lower than the potential size of the entire program: at least $5 billion investment by 2030 and at least 1.800 full-time jobs by 2035. The August announcement therefore brings the declared first industrial phase to a scale higher than the minimum requirements contained in the local agreement.

Water, energy and supply chain are the constraints of the American megafab

A large-scale semiconductor factory consumes significant amounts of water and energy and uses chemicals that require rigorous treatment and control systems. For the Terafab, SpaceX and Tesla plan to use the water from Gibbons Creek Reservoir for industrial activities rather than drawing on local groundwater. The project also includes wastewater treatment plants, water reuse and conservation systems, and dedicated facilities for managing industrial byproducts.

Documentation submitted to Texas authorities confirms that the campus has infrastructure planned for the water treatment, recycling and management, along with industrial waste treatment facilities and the utilities required for production. Actual environmental performance, however, will depend on production volumes, the technologies adopted, and the permits required during the various phases of construction and operation.

Water availability is just one constraint. Advanced semiconductor production requires electrical continuity, extremely high-quality power supplies, cleanroom air conditioning and filtration systems, and a logistics network capable of securing materials and components with very strict specifications. The planned surface area therefore makes Terafab not simply a chip factory, but a integrated industrial ecosystem with its own service infrastructures.

New American capacity remains tied to the global supply chain

On a national scale, the investment is part of the United States' drive to increase domestic semiconductor production. The geographic concentration of certain stages of the Asian supply chain has become an industrial and geopolitical issue, especially for components used in artificial intelligence, telecommunications, satellite systems, and strategic infrastructure. Terafab addresses the same issue from a business perspective: building internal capacity to mitigate the risk that chip availability will limit the growth of the products that will use them.

The announced scale, however, does not eliminate dependence on the global semiconductor ecosystem. Even a highly integrated fab must purchase machinery, materials, automation systems, and technologies developed by specialized suppliers. Industrial autonomy, therefore, does not equate to self-sufficiency: the outcome will depend on the ability of SpaceX, Tesla, and their partners to build a supply chain capable of consistently supplying a plant designed for very high volumes.

The decisive parameter will be the gap between the planned capacity and the capacity actually achieved. 100 million square feetThe potential total investment of $119 billion and the goal of meeting demand exceeding one terawatt describe the scale the program is aiming for. The first test will come in the initial phases: infrastructure construction, equipment installation, process qualification, and the ability to produce chips with yields and costs compatible with the expected uses in robots, autonomous vehicles, and space systems.
