A smart city is a technologically modern urban area, often dedicated to environmental sustainability, which uses electronic methods and sensors to collect data. This information is used to efficiently manage assets, resources and services, improving operations throughout the city. This includes data collected from citizens, devices, buildings and assets, which is processed and analyzed. The following are monitored and managed: traffic; transport systems; power plants; public utility services; water supply networks; waste; criminal investigations; information systems; the schools; libraries; the hospitals; other community services, such as green areas and renewable and sustainable energy. Smart cities are such both in the way in which governments exploit technology and in the ways in which they monitor, analyze, plan and govern the city and the natural ecosystem. Sharing data from different systems and industries creates opportunities for greater understanding and economic benefits. The smart city concept integrates information and communication technologies (“ICT”) and various physical devices connected to the Internet of Things (“IoT”) network. The latter optimize the efficiency of the city's operations and services, for the benefit of citizens.
