Record: PoliMOVE's "autonomous" Dallara at almost 312 times!

On the runway at Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center, the single-seater driven by artificial intelligence shattered the 2019 record

History was made on April 27th. On the runway of NASA's Kennedy Space Center, in Florida, the longest in the world (more than 5 km) and iconic site of the Space Florida launch and landing facility, the Dallara AV-21 of the Politecnico di Milano or PoliMOVE beat the latest world record, as a fully self-driving car.
Winning the "Autonomous Challenge" in Las Vegas in January was therefore not enough for the PoliMove team, committed to transforming algorithms into perfect pilots.
And while "AstroSamantha" was leaving for the International Space Station, the single-seater, named Minerva in honor of Cristoforetti's mission, shattered a record that had stood since 2019, touching 309,3 km/h.

The AV-21 reaches 311,9 km/h: the satisfaction of the Polytechnic

After two days of testing, great satisfaction arrived for Professor Sergio Savaresi, team leader of the project, and for Filippo Parravicini, Alberto Lucchini, Andrea Ticozzi, Andrea Marcer and Cole Frederick who are members of that team, when the average two passes in opposite directions (according to the Guinness World Record regulation) he reached 309,3 km/h. The fastest passage even broke through the wall of 310 per hour, with a splendid 311,9 km per hour.

The University of Alabama worked on the made-in-Varano car

The record is the result of the collaboration between the Politecnico di Milano and the University of Alabama, launched during the "Autonomous Indy Challenge" in October 2021, a race in which the cars ran one at a time and which saw PoliMove finish third in due to a mechanical failure.
“Together, we have explored and touched the new limits of autonomous driving technology”, says Sergio Savaresi, praising the US university that worked on the made-in-Varano de' Melegari single-seater.

Waiting for Atlanta to exceed 300 an hour even on the circuit

On May 2nd and 3rd, in Atlanta, the PoliMove team will in fact begin the tests to exceed 300 km/h also on the circuit, a more difficult result to obtain than the same performance on a straight line.
If the goal is achieved, Minerva would surpass herself: hers, even if it wasn't called that yet at the time, is in fact the record of 173 miles per hour (almost 280 km/h) achieved on the Las Vegas ring.

“We have explored and touched the new limits of technology”

“I would like to thank my great team and Professor Brandon Dixon of the University of Alabama, who did a tremendous and fantastic job to get us this great result. Also thanks to the Indy Autonomous Challenge for all their support, especially Paul Mitchell with Will Bryan, Kris Kozak, Allison Fried and Gina O'Connell as well as Space Florida for letting us use this amazing facility, our main sponsors Oracle, MOVYON and Gruppo Unipol, and our support sponsors Streparava and Fluentis. Thanks also to e-Novia, YAPE, VI-grade and Hexagon PPM for their technical support”.
“This Italy-USA result was the fruit of the collaboration and partnership between the Politecnico di Milano and the University of Alabama. We explored and touched the new limits of autonomous car technology together!”Savaresi said in a tweet.
