Neither automation nor conventional robots: the advantages of two projects underway at the Innovative Technologies Department of the Swiss-Italian university

“Collaborative robotics and artificial intelligence” was the theme of an episode of the podcast series “Voci dalla ricerca”, published by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland.
The episodes are available as always on the streaming services Spotify, Apple Podcasts and on the institutional website www.supsi.ch/go/podcasts.
In the episode of the SUPSI audio gravure, aired on 5 July 2022 and conducted by journalist Omar Cartulano, two research projects are concretely presented which bring out the advantages of their use.
Thanks to their flexibility, ease of programming and relatively low cost, collaborative robots find an ideal use in small and medium-sized enterprises, which however have less access to these technologies due to the lack of the necessary skills for the development of intelligence systems artificial.
This is how the Atlas robot can already work and interact with us

In the words of Andrea Bettoni and Alessandro Giusti, interesting and unpublished AI plans
The “KITT4SME” project is aimed at them, which aims to create solution packages based on artificial intelligence that can support different activities and human-robot interaction.
The project is presented by Andrea Bettoni, professor and senior researcher at the Institute of Systems and Technologies for Sustainable Production (ISTePS).
Alessandro Giusti, Professor of Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Robotics at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Studies (IDSIA USI-SUPSI), presented “Selecting Objects on Conveyor Belts Using Pointing Gestures Sensed by a Wrist-worn Inertial Measurement Units”.
The project provides support to logistics operators to select parcels on conveyor belts by pointing them with a finger, thanks to a bracelet.
A cost-effective approach, based on a relatively simple infrastructure.
