On Wednesday 8 February, the organizers of the Formula E World Championship announced that they had redesigned the entire musical and sound suite used in radio, television and digital channels.
They did so by drawing inspiration from the power of electric acceleration and incorporating the sound of the fastest, lightest, most powerful and most efficient zero-emission racing car ever built: the Gen3.
The new sound identity is part of a general renewal of the "Formula E" brand, which was presented last January at the Hankook Mexico City E-Prix and which was aligned with the start of operations of the new single-seaters .
The Gen3 is FE's third generation racing car and represents a huge technological leap, pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle development, and beyond, in sport.
Incorporating its unique sound into the new musical identity was a key creative goal.

A private test with NIO 333 Racing and Mahindra Racing to record
Tom Player by Lost Track Productions, in collaboration with Alex Bingham of sound design firm Machine, developed the entire musical and sound suite on commission from Formula E.
The two attended private Gen3 testing sessions of two teams in the league, the NIO 333 Racing , Mahindra Racing, where they recorded the noise of racing cars being pushed to their limits before their season debut in Mexico City.
The recordings were then developed into a series of sound assets and packaged into the revamped Music and Audio Effects or SFX package and used for broadcast and digital content.
The all-new soundtrack, including broadcast titles, was composed by Tom Player and recorded live with a 55-piece orchestra at the Abbey Road Studios.

The film features the drivers of the current ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, including reigning champion Stoffel Vandoorne, Mitch Evans, António Félix Da Costa and Jake Dennis, with CGI images of the new Gen3 car speeding through some of the cities host races this season, including Cape Town, Sao Paulo, Monaco and London.
Viewers of Channel 4 in the UK were those who experienced the new title sequence for the first time on terrestrial TV on Saturday 11 February, with the live broadcast of the Greenko Hyderabad E-Prix 2023 in India starting at 9am.

Henry Chilcott: “Everything has to work like a movie soundtrack”
Henry Chilcott, Chief Marketing Officer of Formula E, said: “This is a year of great renewal for Formula E: new Gen3 race car, new teams, new look and new sound. Working with Lost Track Productions and Machine Sound, our ambition was to create a bold new anthem for our sporting discipline, as part of a revamped brand identity.”
And yet: “Tom Player's music library is designed to work like a movie soundtrack, evoking different emotions to enhance the race weekend experience, from broadcast opening credits to live podium celebrations.”
The new soundtrack consists of a 7-track album titled “Change. Accelerated (The Official Formula E Soundtrack)” and is available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
