In Switzerland, the computerized patient record will become a pillar of the health system.
With targeted measures, the Federal Council in fact, it intends to further develop the CIP in order to increase its benefits for patients, doctors, nurses, hospitals, nursing homes and all other healthcare facilities.
In the future, the Computerized Patient Record will be used by all health workers, not only in the stationary sector, but also in doctor's practices, pharmacies or outpatient therapies.
Furthermore, its opening will be free for all people domiciled in Switzerland.
In its session of 28 June 2023, the Federal Council put a revision to this effect of the Federal Law on the CIP up for consultation.

In August 2021, the Federal Council decided to promote the dissemination and use of CIP by means of various measures and, to this end, revised the Federal Act on the Computerized Patient Record.

Already today, all hospitals, maternity homes and nursing homes are required to use the CIP and to enter all information relevant to treatment in it.
In the future, the Computerized Patient Record will be prescribed throughout treatment path, and therefore also for outpatient service providers such as doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists and chiropractors, who have to affiliate with a CIP provider and register information about treatments as well as related data and results.
As decided by the Swiss Parliament, the registration takes place in a decentralized manner with the appropriate certified providers, the so-called reference communities or communities.
There are currently eight such providers.
Their certification is the responsibility of accredited certification bodies.
The cantons must check whether all practices, pharmacies and other outpatient service providers are affiliated.

The revision of the law also aims to clarify the division of powers between the Confederation and the cantons as well as the financing of the CIP.
Going forward, federal authorities will coordinate and fund further development of the contents of the Computerized Patient Record.
The cantons will be responsible for financing the reference community and will ensure that at least one of them is active on their territory.

With the revision of the law, the holders of a Computerized Patient Record will be able, with their explicit consent, to make available for research purposes non-anonymous medical data contained therein.
The consultation procedure on the draft revision will end on 19 October 2023.
