The Volkswagen Group supports the Vatican City State in its transition towards sustainable mobility.
At the beginning of 2024, the German company will deliver just under 40 100 percent electric vehicles from the VW ID. family, ranging from the ID.3 to the ID.4 and ID.5.
The cars are part of the Papal State's decarbonisation strategy, which aims to make its fleet carbon neutral environmental point of view by 2030.
Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing, Sales and After-Sales of the Wolfsburg-based company, and Christian Dahlheim, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Financial Services AG, personally delivered the first electric cars to the Vatican, namely two IDs. 3 Pro Performance2.

“Ecological Conversion 2030” aims to reduce the CO2 footprint of the state's vehicle fleet

The Vatican City State is strongly committed to the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions that allow us to concretely reduce the impact of human activities ontechnology for the protection of the planet.
Mobility is at the center of a specific program, called "Ecological Conversion 2030", which aims to reduce the CO2 footprint of the state's vehicle fleet.
To achieve this, existing vehicles must be gradually replaced by electric ones, to make the entire fleet CO2 neutral by 2030.
Volkswagen is the partner chosen for this project and, through Volkswagen Financial Services, will supply the Vatican City State with a fleet of cars from the beginning of 2024.

In the aftermath of Nissan's gift of a zero-emission Leaf to the Holy Father on the occasion of his eightieth birthday on 17 December 2016, Volkswagen had in turn broken the ice and handed over the keys to two e-ups to the Vatican Gendarmerie !, the battery-powered version of the German city car.
The delivery ceremony took place on 24 March 2017 in the Vatican Gardens and had as its protagonists Andrea Alessi, Director of Volkswagen Italia, Monsignor Fernando Vergèz Alzaga, Secretary General of the Governorate of the Vatican City State, and Domenico Giani, Commander of the Gendarmerie Corps.
The two cars will be used in public order and security services.
The protection of the environment and natural resources was addressed by Pope Francis in his first encyclical and the use of electric cars is a contribution to improving air quality as well as being one of the pillars of the strategy for the future of the Brand and the same German group.
With 160 kilometers of autonomy, the two VW e-up! "forerunners" for the Gendarmerie are white with a yellow stripe and are equipped with Vatican sound and light devices.
The cars were manufactured in the Slovakian plant in Bratislava and were set up in Italy thanks to the contribution of four specialized companies, NCT, CSM, Artlantis and Vama.
