From 21 September to 24 September 2021 the finals of the triennial robotics competition were held in the United States of America Subterranean Challenge of the American research agency DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
An international team with Swiss representation and the participation of armasuisse Science and technology (S+T) won this highly competitive competition.
In the final, in the USA, the winning team “CERBERUS” he beat seven international teamsi of the cream of robotics. The team consisted of robotics researchers from the Switzerland (Federal Polytechnic of Zurich, Flyability SA), give it USA, from UK and Norway.
To prepare optimally for DARPA Robotics Challenge, the Swiss Center for Drones and Robotics of Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (CSDR DDPS) of armasuisse Science and Technology (S+T), in collaboration with Engineer/Rescue/NBC Training Formation ofSwiss army, has made available surface and underground plants, within which “CERBERUS” managed to test realistically several robots.

The robotics competition is started in 2019, reaching its climax with the final of September 2021. The proof of the challenge consisted inexplore the environment il as fast as possible with any number of robots, and of accurately locate artifacts, such as mannequins, fire extinguishers or first aid equipment. All inside the Louisville Mega Cavern, in Kentucky.

To deal with the different tests were employed smaller aircraft e ground vehicles. In addition to the more conventional wheeled or tracked vehicles, the lion's share went to the four-legged robots.
The winner of the Challenge also bet heavily on all fours. In fact, four specimens of the Swiss robot ANYmal, one of which of CSDR DDPS.
The research agency DARPA of the United States Department of Defense called the competition to promote new approaches to quick cartography, navigation and the underground research.
The DARPA Challenge is considered one of the most ambitious robotics competitions in the world.
