The Bonobos in Salonga? Four years to gain their trust.

In the Congolese park, research on great apes becomes a test bed for data, local communities, biosecurity and controlled ecotourism.

In Salonga National Park, in Democratic Republic of CongoBonobo conservation is proceeding with a measure unusual for many environmental projects: long-term. Researchers and trackers have been working for years to accustom a group of approximately 60 bonobo, with the aim of first enabling close-up scientific observation and, at a later stage, carefully regulated forms of nature tourism.

The case is relevant because it shows a barely visible frontier of the environmental management: not just protecting an area, but building repeatable procedures, local expertise, data collection, and social trust around a vulnerable species. Habituation is not training and does not involve direct interaction. It is a controlled presence protocol, in which the same observers show up every day, with predictable behavior, without feeding the animals or forcing their response.

The complexity is evident already in the routine. Trackers can leave the field around the 3 in the morning to reach the previous night's nest site before the animals move. From then on, they follow the group into the forest until the new evening nests are built. Initially, the bonobos fled at the sight of people. Today, researchers sometimes manage to stay with them for two or three hours, although the presence of more visitors may still be excessive.

The territorial context explains why this work has a value that goes beyond mere animal observation. The official page of the Salonga National Park describes the area as Africa's largest forest park, with 33.500 square kilometers, a forest cover close to the 95 percent of the landscape and a potential share equal to 40 percent of the world's bonobo population. UNESCO calls Salonga the largest tropical rainforest reserve in Africa and emphasizes its isolation, with access primarily by water.

The science of habituation between behavior and safety

The most innovative element of the project is not in a single tool, but in the integration between ethological observation, health protocols, monitoring techniques and organization of field work. WWF has indicated that the Bonobo Habituation Project was started in 2023 and aims to promote coexistence between bonobos and human communities, also creating the conditions for future tourism based on responsible observation.

The methodology is based on three steps: identifying groups and subgroups, strengthening trackers' skills, and establishing a climate of tolerance over time. In practice, this means recognizing individuals, recording their movements, interpreting stress signals, and maintaining a sufficient distance. Bonobos, like chimpanzees, are among humans' closest living relatives; the WWF also reminds us that they share the same 98,7 percent of DNA. This very proximity makes biosecurity crucial.

Health vulnerability requires additional precautions. Great apes can be exposed to human pathogens, including respiratory infections. Therefore, Salonga's project includes screening, hygiene, masks when near animals, and minimum distances. Biological data, sensors, and a broader scientific network

Habituation generates value even before visitors arrive. Biological material collected without direct contact, such as fecal and urinary samples, allows for genetic, nutritional, and health analyses.

Salonga is part of the larger Bonobo Diversity Project, or BonDiv, which aims to build the first standardized dataset across the entire range of the species. The project declares activities such as site selection, researcher training, and the installation of monitoring grids from 25 square kilometers, collection of behavioral data, environmental sampling, camera traps, vegetation, climate and sharing in real time with partners and authorities.

According to data published by BonDiv, the initiative involves nine main sites, 14 satellite sitesbeyond 60.000 video from camera traps and more 10.000 samples collected. These numbers help us understand why habituation isn't just a prerequisite for tourism. It's a knowledge infrastructure, useful for connecting animal behavior with forest status, human pressure, and intervention priorities.

The possibility of seeing bonobos in the wild remains, for now, a prospect rather than an established goal. The World Wildlife Fund reports that tourism infrastructure such as lodges, restaurants, and offices are under construction in the Salonga region. However, the project also highlights the main limitation of any wildlife tourism model: economic value must not prevail over the safety of the animals and the quality of relationships with communities.

Well-regulated nature tourism can generate local income, fund conservation, and strengthen public interest in threatened species. But in the case of bonobos, the margin for error is slim. Too many visitors, non-compliance with distances, or insufficient health checks could jeopardize years of work. The very gradual nature of the project indicates that tourist demand cannot be the sole decision-making parameter.

For the conservation sector, Salonga Park offers an operational lesson: effective solutions arise from the alignment of research, public management, local knowledge, basic infrastructure, and stable funding. The most visible result, in the future, could be a visitor observing bonobos in the forest. The less obvious outcome, but already underway, is the construction of a chain of expertise capable of transforming data, local work, and biological conservation into a verifiable model.
