The US archipelago celebrates 25 years of progress thanks to fifth-generation telephony, transforming itself into a new digital hub of the Pacific

In February 2024, Bluesky Communications celebrated its 25th anniversary with the official launch of the 5G non-standalone (NSA) network in the islands of American Samoa. This event marked a milestone for the archipelago, projecting it into a future of advanced connectivity and new technological opportunities.
The launch ceremony, held at Utulei’s Rex Lee Auditorium, featured hands-on demonstrations of the capabilities of 5G, including holographic video calls and a real-time controlled quadruped robot. These presentations highlighted the practical applications of the new network, underscoring Bluesky’s commitment to bringing innovation and technological progress to the local community.
Justin Tuiasopo, CEO of Bluesky, said:
“The introduction of our 5G network represents a significant step towards the future of connectivity for the people of American Samoa.”
He also stressed how the company has always tried to adapt to the changes in the telecommunications sector to offer the best to its customers.
Partnership with Ericsson: a cutting-edge network
To realize this ambitious initiative, Bluesky has collaborated with Ericsson, a global leader in communications technologies. The partnership, launched in 2022, has led to the implementation of advanced solutions such as the Ericsson Radio System, Cloud Core and Cloud Unified Data Management, essential to support 3G, 4G and 5G NSA connections.
Eric Boudriau, Vice President and Head of Customer Unit Regional Carriers at Ericsson North America, praised Bluesky's commitment:
“They have charted a course toward a connected future where innovation thrives, communication knows no borders, and the island is at the forefront of technological progress.”
This collaboration has enabled Bluesky to deliver an enhanced mobile network, improving user experience and paving the way for new digital applications and services.

Expansion and Inclusiveness, the Future of Connectivity
Bluesky, a trademark of AST Telecom LLC dba Bluesky Communications, didn’t stop with the initial 5G launch. The company announced plans to expand its network with new cell sites on Tutuila and Manu’a Islands throughout 2024.
This expansion aims to ensure wider coverage and further improve the technological infrastructure of the archipelago.
Bluesky’s 5G network currently covers around 93 percent of the population, offering speeds of up to 150 Mbps. At the same time, the company is investing in the modernization of residential services, with initiatives to update technologies and improve access to the internet and cable television.
Bluesky is also committed to community development, supporting youth initiatives and partnering with educational institutions like American Samoa Community College to promote technology awareness among younger generations.
A model for islands in the great oceans and beyond
Bluesky’s success is an example for other Pacific Island Nations looking to bridge the digital divide. Deploying 5G in a remote territory like American Samoa shows that with the right vision and collaboration, geographic and infrastructure challenges can be overcome.
Bluesky’s parent company, Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATH), highlighted the significance of this milestone.
Ivan Fong, CEO of ATH Group, declared:
“We are proud to announce that BlueSky American Samoa has successfully launched our group’s first 5G network, setting a historic milestone for innovation and connectivity in the Pacific.”
This development not only improves the quality of life of the inhabitants of American Samoa, but also strengthens the archipelago's position as a technology hub in the region.
The Connected and Promising Future of American Samoa
Bluesky’s 5G launch marks the beginning of a new era for American Samoa. With a faster and more reliable network, the archipelago is now better equipped to meet the challenges of the future and take advantage of the opportunities presented by digital transformation.
Bluesky, with the support of partners such as Ericsson and ATH, continues to invest in innovation and community development, demonstrating that even the most remote regions can be protagonists in the global technology landscape.
As Justin Tuiasosopo stated:
“American Samoa, with its remote location from many other nations, is exposed to many challenges; however, Bluesky has always acted responsibly to bridge this gap, so that businesses, organizations and communities in the archipelago can benefit from services and experiences on par with the rest of the world.”
