Just steps from the historic center of Oranjestad, amidst Dutch colonial architecture and the ocean breeze, the island of Aruba has given rise to a silent but strategically important revolution. May 20, 2024 marked the official inauguration of the renovated Maria Convent Building, destined to become the beating heart of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education throughout the Caribbean territory of the Netherlands.

It was a 7,3 million euro project, funded by theXNUMX-XNUMX business days and created in partnership with the Government of Aruba, the University of Aruba and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which merges cultural heritage, urban regeneration and higher education.
Inside the 19th-century convent, once a place of religious silence and solemn prayers, today the conversations of international students, laboratory simulations and high-capacity digital connections resonate.

“We wanted to demonstrate that even a small island can have a global impact,”

declared on the occasion the former Prime Minister of Aruba, Evelyn Wever-Croes.

“With SISSTEM we are training the minds that will face the challenges of climate change, energy transition and sustainable innovation in the Caribbean”.

From Cultural Heritage to Digital Future: A Symbolic Project

The renovation of the ancient religious building is not only an example of building redevelopment, but also a powerful metaphor of transformation: from the memory of the colonial past towards a new modern, technological and inclusive identity.

As the European Union Ambassador to Guyana and Suriname, René van Nes, stressed,

“the marriage between historical architecture and modern science perfectly embodies our vision of a development anchored in cultural roots, but projected towards the future”.

The renovated building now houses four advanced classrooms, two server rooms, a digital library, a lecture hall, five study rooms, offices for 30 teachers and a computer lab with ICT equipment for 40 students.

But the real innovation is in the details: intelligent lighting and air conditioning systems, reuse of grey water for irrigation and thermal insulation panels, in line with the UN SDGs.

“It is one of the most sustainable academic buildings in the Caribbean,”

confirms the project's chief architect, Armand Croes, an expert in building restoration and member of the Monuments Bureau.

“We have combined energy efficiency and asset conservation, demonstrating that it is not necessary to demolish to innovate.”

SISSTEM: The new educational frontier of the University of Aruba

The Maria Convent has thus become the new headquarters of the SISSTEM program (acronym for Sustainable Island Solutions through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), a pioneering faculty of the University of Aruba launched in 2020 with the academic support of KU Leuven, a well-known and historic university in Louvain, in Belgium.

The three-year Applied Sciences with a focus on sustainability is designed to meet the specific needs of small island states. Students from Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire and even the Netherlands or Suriname enroll to learn how to design smart solutions to environmental, water and energy problems.

“We have built a multidisciplinary curriculum that blends engineering, environmental science and management,”

explains Professor Sjeidy Felida, academic coordinator of the SISSTEM program.

“Our goal is to prepare a new generation of changemakers, capable of translating technical knowledge into concrete actions for the good of their communities.”

Graduates of Sustainable Island Solutions through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are now employed by public utilities, NGOs, technology startups and applied research centers throughout the Caribbean basin, contributing to the area’s energy transition with solutions such as solar microgrids, low-impact desalination systems or passive architectures.

The key role of international partnerships in the model

The Maria Convent project is an emblematic case of multilateral diplomacy applied to local development. The partnership between the Government of Oranjestad, the EU and UNDP has combined project capacity, economic resources and strategic vision.

“This facility is a tangible demonstration of how international cooperation can generate real and lasting impact,”

says Ugo Blanco, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in the Caribbean.

“It’s not just about building a building, but about creating a sustainable innovation ecosystem.”

Aruba, thanks also to this synergy, is gaining a new geopolitical positioning as a Caribbean hub of STEM education, complementary to the large academic centers of the United States and Latin America, but with a strong vocation for sustainability.

The choice to focus on strategic sectors such as renewable energy, water management and climate resilience is not accidental. According to a recent report by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), STEM education represents the main lever to strengthen the resilience of island economies to climate and economic shocks.

A replicable model for the islands (not only Dutch) of the future

The Aruban experience can become a model for many other islands in the world, especially for SIDS (Small Island Developing States), which share common challenges such as resource scarcity, climate vulnerability and energy dependence.

“We have received requests from Barbados, Mauritius and Cape Verde to replicate the SISSTEM approach,”

reveals with satisfaction the Minister of Economy and Innovation of Aruba, Geoffrey Wever.

“It’s a sign that we’re doing something that goes beyond the borders of our island.”

International interest is not only academic: investors and NGOs are looking with increasing attention to Aruba as an ideal laboratory for testing green technologies, scalable educational approaches and policy tools for social innovation.

The Convent of Mary, from a static space of the past, has thus become a dynamic place of the future, where every classroom, every experiment, every idea brought forward by young talents becomes a real contribution to the transformation of the Caribbean and beyond.
