Volvo EX30, the battery now powers the outside world too

The update enables a 3kW socket, while Plug & Charge automates identification and payment at compatible charging stations.

An electrical outlet to take to the campsite, to the workplace, or near a sports field. With a distributed software update, over-the-air, the Volvo EX30 can draw energy from its own traction battery and power external devices with a maximum power of 3 kilowatts at 16 ampsThe car does not change components or require workshop intervention: a capability foreseen by the vehicle architecture is made usable through the new software and a dedicated adapter.

The function is called Vehicle to Load, abbreviated to V2L, and transforms your car's charging socket into a power supply. It can power a coffee maker, power tools, a portable refrigerator, kitchen appliances, or a bicycle battery. The 3 kW limit allows it to power numerous household and professional devices, as long as their total power consumption remains within the specified limit.

However, the system does not allow for uncontrolled use of all the stored energy. When the state of charge drops below 20 percentThe EX30 automatically cuts off power, preserving a reserve for mobility. This is an essential detail: the battery continues to have the primary function of powering the vehicle, while external use remains dependent on the ability to restart.

An adapter connects the devices to the car socket

To activate the V2L you need to insert a battery into the charging port. adapter sold separately and connect the device. From the user's perspective, the result is similar to that of a normal power outlet. However, the price and availability of the accessory depend on the market, while compatibility may vary depending on the year of manufacture and the vehicle's configuration.

The announced distribution concerns the markets of the areas EMEA, Asia-Pacific e Latin america in which the charging standard is used CCS2. This feature will not be available on EX30s released in the US. United States, in Canada, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. In these countries, the update will still bring the interface changes and other expected software improvements.

V2L is the most immediate form of bidirectional charging: energy not only flows from the socket to the battery, but can also travel the other way. The final load, in this case, is a single device or a limited group of devices. Technology should therefore not be confused with Vehicle-to-Home, designed to power a home, nor with the Vehicle-to-Grid, which provides for exchange with the electricity grid.

These more complex applications require compatible infrastructure, home energy management systems, safety devices, and specific technical and contractual rules for grid interaction. The EX30, however, offers local, limited capacity: the power exits the car and reaches the connected load directly, without the vehicle acting as a generator for an entire building.

The software unlocks a feature provided by the hardware

The most industrially interesting aspect isn't just the ability to power an appliance away from an outlet. The update shows how an increasingly software-driven car can acquire new functions after the sale, provided the necessary hardware has already been designed, installed, and certified. The manufacturer can thus modify the product's behavior without replacing it or recalling it to the workshop for every digital development.

Volvo Cars announced in February 2026 that the EX30 was hardware-ready for Vehicle-to-Load. The update now released completes the transition from technical readiness to actual use, extending the capability to cars already delivered. The distinction is important: the software doesn't physically add bidirectional capability to a car that doesn't have it, but rather enables and governs compatible components already present.

“Thanks to software development and over-the-air updates, we have the ability to continue improving our cars even after customers have purchased them, adding new useful features, including ones they may not have even imagined when they purchased them.”

has explained Alwin Bakkenes, responsible for Global Software Engineering activities at Volvo Cars.

This model extends development beyond the start of production and customer delivery. The car remains an upgradeable system, in which new features, fixes, and interface changes can be deployed across the fleet. Continuity offers clear advantages, but it also increases the burden of IT maintenance: package reliability, version compatibility, digital security, and clarity about equipment become part of the ownership experience.

In the case of V2L, the transformation also impacts how the battery is viewed. The battery isn't just used to cover distances, but becomes a temporary energy reserve available for other uses. The range remains limited compared to a domestic system, but it's sufficient for activities where grid access is difficult, expensive, or temporarily impossible.

Plug & Charge eliminates cards and charging station applications

The same package is introduced in some European markets Plug & Charge, a feature that addresses a different problem: the fragmentation of the public charging experience. After activation and pairing with a compatible service, the driver connects the cable to the charging station and the session can begin automatically, without opening an app, tapping a card, or performing any further manual operations.

Vehicle identification and payment management occur through the exchange of information between the car, the infrastructure, and the charging service. The cable therefore does more than simply transport energy: it allows compatible systems to recognize each other and authorize the operation. For the user, the advantage is fewer steps, especially during journeys and when stopping at different public networks.

Initial availability is more limited than general interface changes. Plug & Charge is expected in Europe on EX30s from model year 2026 and requires compatible charging stations and operators. Therefore, not all public infrastructures can automatically offer the same experience, nor does the upgrade alone eliminate the differences between networks, contracts, and payment methods.

The package also affects the user experience of the central display. customizable context bar It allows you to bring your favorite functions or system-suggested actions to the forefront, while the settings menu has been reorganized to reduce the number of steps needed to reach the main controls. These are less visible changes than V2L, but they affect operations repeated every day.

Volvo Cars says it also used customer feedback to inform these changes. In a car with so many controls concentrated in the touchscreen, the interface's design isn't an afterthought: it determines how quickly it takes to access functions, how much attention the driver requires, and how easy it is to understand the available settings.

From traction battery to a reserve for everyday use

Using a battery as an external power source can be useful in a wide variety of situations. When camping, it can power lights and small appliances without using a combustion generator; when working outdoors, it can support tools within their power limits; during a brief power outage, it can keep an essential device plugged directly into the car operational. Actual battery life and duration depend on the available charge and load absorption.

A 500-watt appliance requires a very different amount of energy than a device nearing the 3 kW threshold. Power indicates how much the system can supply at a given moment, while usable energy depends on the remaining battery capacity and the reserve set by the software. V2L therefore does not make consumption irrelevant: it allows it to be managed by drawing on a battery already carried by the vehicle.

The term "mobile power bank" should also be interpreted in a functional sense. The EX30 doesn't become a power station or automatically replace a home emergency system. It offers a temporary outlet with higher capacity than conventional portable batteries, with built-in protection and the requirement to never drop below the preset charge level.

The function is also available on the Volvo EX60 The manufacturer plans to extend this to other models. If this approach is applied to a wider range of models, bidirectional capability could go from an occasional feature to a recurring requirement for electric platforms: not only can they receive energy more quickly, but they can also decide when, where, and for which load they can return a portion of it.

For those who already own a compatible EX30, the update is free and is being progressively rolled out internationally. Actual access to V2L, however, remains dependent on the vehicle's configuration, the market, and the purchase of the adapter. The new utility is therefore the result of a combination of three elements: prepared hardware, updated software and compatible physical accessoryIf one of the three is missing, the car retains the other digital enhancements, but cannot transform its battery into a mobile socket.
